How Do You Do It?

I don't know how y'all do it.

My past few weeks have been quite busy, filling orders one after the next, and going through the lessons in my class. I can't complain. My two children both attend full-time school, which leaves me with a large chunk of daytime working hours, and during those hours, work, I do. But somehow, I'm still working every evening too. And barely finding time for life's work, dinner, and oh, being a parent.

And then there's this wild and wonderful online community of folks who seem to do it all. With grace, and wit, and talent to spare.

Take Lisa, for instance. She home schools her four children, has a photography business, cooks up a storm, and finds time to write thoughtful, honest posts several times a week.

Erin got a surprising amount of posts published while she packed up her home and moved cross-country. And drove there with her two young kids.

Ella writes often, her blog full of gorgeous styling, very cool downloadable freebies, delicious recipes, and fun crafts--all while dealing with a health issue that effects her every day.

Heather is posting creative projects just a few short weeks after the birth of her third child. Oh, and she home schools her two older boys.

So many of you share so much, even when your husbands are far away for long periods of time and all the responsibilities of a family fall square on you (Erin, Emily, Francesca).

Valarie writes often on her three different blogs, in addition to her work as a composer/pianist,and if that wasn't enough, she just started her own publishing company and wrote a book.

Susie runs her busy illustration business, is pregnant with her third child, and is currently packing up/trying to sell her house, in preparation to their big move (newborn in tow) to a different country.

Me? I get a good healthy serving of what I have always wanted--an onslaught of jewelry orders--and I declare that something's gotta give. Total time-management wimp, I know.

I don't know how you all do it, but I'm in awe. (And I'm taking notes.)

A Few Things

The second week of April snuck up on me. I've got lots of updates and news to share today.

Our last "small change" is to put baking soda and vinegar to better use. They serve me well for cookies and salad dressing, but those two ingredients have so many other uses—all purpose cleaner, shampoo substitute (via Angry Chicken), tub and toilet scrub, volcano...
I'm going to realize the full potential of these two chemical-free, all-natural pantry items.

In other news, Lisa at 5 Orange Potatoes is hosting a different kind of challenge. This month is Children and Nature Awareness Month, and to celebrate, Lisa is hosting The Great Outdoor Challenge. For the remainder of April, participants will be posting pictures of their kids doing whatever it is they do outside. It's perfect timing, and mother nature is making it really easy for us this week.

Yesterday, my kids did some good ol' fashioned graffiti. Yes, the girls have found a good use for the charred sticks left over from the brush we recently burned. (It's fun, and it washes off with a hose!)

Also! Kristina from Growing a Better Me has passed on a Beautiful Blogger Award to me. Blushing. Don't you just love the name of her blog? It says so much about her and what she writes about. With that honor comes the pleasure of passing it on to someone else. So, with no further ado...I'm giving it to Dana, at Create Share Inspire. I love seeing the behind-the-scenes of her paintings, drawings, studio, and what sparks her creativity.

Lastly, Alison at L is for Latte wrote about me and my work last week. She is a writer/editor/knitter who keeps a blog that is funny, witty, and so well written, it puts people like me to shame. Connections

The blogging world has opened up many windows of opportunity for me, and not only for my jewelry. I have found a world of connections with fellow artists and bloggers—all whom share parts of their lives quite generously. In the past few weeks, the depth of those connections have revealed themselves in interesting ways.

I have been reading voraciously lately, steadily working through the stack of books on my nightstand. A few weeks ago, I was reading Day After Night, by Anita Diamant. As I read the line, "Now get me a syringe, won't you dear? she said, taking a small orange out of her string bag," I immediately felt a sense of deep-rooted history and cross-cultural kinship. What a beautiful coincidence that I have been participating in string-a-long 2010, making string bags along with women from all over. My reading of that book also corresponded with Susie's trip to Israel, which she blogged about while there. Her photos and stories from her visit are amazing, and helped me to create vivid pictures in my mind as I read the story of the detainee camp, Atlit.

Last night, while reading Beloved, by Toni Morrison, I stopped short when I read this line, "It's when you bump into a rememory that belongs to somebody else." Rememory! Comes delightfully close to my daughter's word remembery (of Remembery Capsule fame). I love knowing that people have melded words together to make a perfect definition for generations.

So much is intertwined. Time and distance dissolve. The lines between my life, family, and friends is blurred by connections with folks from other areas and even countries via the world wide web. Suddenly it is clear— the planet is quite small and time has not changed the fundamentals of humanity much at all.

A Flood, an Anniversary, and a Snack

Ahoy! Here's the state of my back yard at this very moment:

Everything is a little topsy turvy right now with a pond for a yard, a wet basement, and two days of school canceled due to flooding. (Makes the mini flood of last summer seem like a walk in the park.)

Here's the good news: today is my one year blogging anniversary! I owe it all to my college roomie, Erica (the original Remembery Capsule recipient), who gently pressed me (many times) to start this blog. It was to be a marketing tool for my jewelry business, which I suppose it is, in a roundabout way. What I never could have imagined was the connections I would make, the knowledge I would glean, and the doors of opportunity that would open. So glad I finally listened to her good advice and started this...I don't know, the word blog just doesn't seem to do it justice.

Another good note: these bread sticks (recipe from Petit Appetit; Eat, Drink, and Be Merry) are the perfect companion for a jar of Nutella. Oh boy. They're made from whole wheat, so that balances out the chocolate, right?

...aaaaand last but not least, I had fun making a few of these Swat Team Kitties for my nephew Nicholas and another little friend, Elizabeth (happy birthday to you both!) . I hadn't knit or crocheted any new friends since the holiday projects and birthday gift. It was a much-needed break but it's good to be back at it. The girls have noticed a lack of new stuffed cuties, too, and they're putting the pressure on now. Stay tuned for more...

There's so much out there to be found on the web. I wonder what I'll stumble upon next? What will prompt me to start along a new creative path, try a new ingredient, or rethink how something is done? I promise I won't hoard all the good ideas.

Thirty-four

As you know, I've been featuring my husband "A's " creativity this week. The reasons are many, but he celebrated a birthday the other day, too, and this was my way of shining the spotlight on him. Here's how we celebrated his turning thirty-four:

His gift was this crazy little bonsai tree. Coupled with origami, you'd think he is a dedicated student of the Japanese Arts, wouldn't you? While it hasn't been a conscious decision, he has delved into both origami and the art of the bonsai whole-heartedly. And wait till you see his most recent creative endeavour—a decidedly Japanese art form (more on that soon).

We chowed down on some Root Beer Float Cake (do yourself a favor and try this). I am now Joy the Baker's biggest fan.

Remember the birthday tree? The pug ornaments made way for volcano ornaments, the "theme" of A's birthday celebration. It's funny, the girls insist that even the adult birthday parties in our house have a theme. With help from two small girls, A came up with volcano, and all agreed that is was boy-ish enough for the only male in the family.

I think it's worth mentioning some of the themes the girls have chosen for their parties over the years: unicorn, horse, Star Wars, Chicken, Star Wars Chicken (seriously), and last but not least, Jerry Seinfeld (don't ask).

After seeing the recipe for chai concentrate on Amy's blog, I knew it had to be part of A's birthday gift (he's a big fan of chai). Then I started seeing it everywhere—bloggers from all walks were talking about it, all of them raving about it. And now I know why. Super easy, super delicious. (happy birthday to me?)
